Tutor Doctor Continues Florida Expansion

Global, in-home tutoring brand has 37 territories in the Sunshine State and looks to expand throughout Central Florida

Tutor Doctor is making waves throughout Florida, and the momentum is just getting started.

The global, in-home tutoring franchise has grown to more than 560 territories in 15 countries due to its individualized tutoring programs and is seeing great success in Florida specifically, with 37 locations and room for 145 more.

“The area that is the most important to us is Central Florida - specifically the Orlando area,” said Dennis Campbell, Tutor Doctor’s director of franchise development. “We have some franchisees there that have done really well in the area, but we still have a lot of opportunity throughout Naples, Tallahassee, Lakeland, Kissimmee and Gainesville.”

Florida’s overburdened school system is one reason the brand has been so successful there.

“Just like most markets, Florida schools are deficient in educating our kids today,” Campbell said. “Children have different learning styles and comprehend material and concepts differently. What we do that our competition doesn’t is we collaborate and serve as a resource for the schools and for families looking for one-to-one attention for their children.”

The population of students who are not fluent in English is also a huge part of the reception Tutor Doctor has received in Florida.

“English as a second language is a big part of our success in Florida because we have a lot of folks immigrating to that market that don’t necessarily speak English as a first language,” Campbell said. “We’re not just tutoring the kids, we’re tutoring the parents as well.”

Potential franchise owners might be surprised to know that Tutor Doctor’s services are not limited to children. Tutor Doctor does a great deal of test prep, including preparation for the bar exam and the CPA exam.

Campbell assures prospective franchisees that they will find their local communities receptive to the work Tutor Doctor does, and cited a high retention rate among customers.

“It’s going to require work to build those relationships, but once those relationships are established and you have some students with success stories and the teachers are certain that Tutor Doctor has helped their students, the floodgates open up with referrals,” Campbell said.

Potential franchisees should know that by working with Tutor Doctor, they are expected to work within the parameters of an established system with proven results. To that end, someone looking to take creative approaches to tutoring might not be the best franchise fit.

“We’re not trying to figure out Tutor Doctor,” Campbell said. “I think a lot of people with creative minds want to get into a business where they can add their special sauce, if you will, and Tutor Doctor’s at a point in its trajectory where we know what works to do well as a Tutor Doctor franchisee.”

Lacey Frank, a franchise owner and former teacher, and her franchise partner and fellow former educator Alison Parker, have achieved great success in Florida’s Panama City-Lynn Haven area.

“As teachers, we saw firsthand the need for tutors in our community and we thought it was something we could provide,” Parker said. “Once we started doing some research, we came across Tutor Doctor and saw that their core values aligned with what we wanted to do.”

They opened their first Tutor Doctor franchise in 2015, and their operation has grown to include more than 100 tutors servicing more than 300 families in the Panama City-Lynn Haven area.

“The level of support and training Tutor Doctor gives to its franchisees — it was amazing,” Parker said. “Everything was laid out for us and made manageable. Even three years in, we have the full support of the team at Tutor Doctor, so we are never fully on our own.”

Tutor Doctor was founded in 2000, and has since helped more than 150,000 students in 15 countries. The franchise brand has also hired more than 35,000 tutors since it first opened. Tutor Doctor’s one-to-one, low overhead model enables franchisees to join its system for an initial investment that falls between $68,500 to $101,700.
